Going to the dentist is an activity that many people don’t exactly enjoy and is probably at the top of everyone’s list of least-favorite chores. If this is you, you are not alone. Nearly half of all Americans avoid going to the dentist or don’t go at all, with fear being the most commonly cited reason for avoiding the dentist. At Dr. Kava’s Sioux City Dental, our goal is to keep all of our patients’ smiles healthy and beautiful so they can feel their best. This is why Dr. Kava offers several types of sedation dentistry in Sioux City, IA to help his patients overcome any fear and anxiety barriers they may have. This way, they can get the treatment and care they need along with a beautiful smile they can be proud of and confident in, while relaxing at the same time.

Dr. Kava offers in-office IV (intravenous) sedation, oral (pill) sedation, and nitrous oxide (laughing gas). Each type of sedation offers a different level of relaxation, but they can all be used during any dental procedure when necessary. Depending on your comfort levels and the extent of treatment needed, you and Dr. Kava can discuss the type of sedation that is best for your needs.

Moderate IV Sedation

We believe no one should have to go without the dental care they need and deserve to be happy and healthy due to fear or anxiety. This is why Dr. Kava underwent extensive training to become licensed in administering moderate IV sedation. IV sedation involves the intravenous administration of sedative and analgesic drugs. Because they are administered directly into the bloodstream, IV sedation offers several advantages over its oral sedation counterpart including:

  • Fast-acting – no need to take medication prior to your appointment
  • Reversible – there are drugs we can use to reverse the effects
  • Customizable – Dr. Kava can adjust the dose in real time to ensure comfort throughout a procedure

Most importantly, moderate IV sedation induces a “sleep” state in which you are completely relaxed and pain-free. You will have little, if any, memory of your procedure due to the amnesic effects of IV sedation.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves the administration of anti-anxiety medications in pill form. You will take the medication prior to your appointment to give the medications time to take effect. This form of sedation is good for those who have less-severe fear and anxiety of the dentist and are undergoing shorter appointments. It is more affordable than IV sedation and can be used in conjunction with nitrous oxide for increased sedative effect.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is probably the most commonly used form of sedation in dentistry because it is so easy to use and administer. Nitrous oxide is administered through a small mask placed over your nose during your procedure. The gas helps you to feel calmer and more relaxed during your visit. The effects can be easily adjusted and wear off within a few minutes of discontinuation, meaning you can get back to your day-to-day activities right away. It is the only form of sedation that does not require a driver to drive you to or from your appointment. It is great for those undergoing shorter procedures like cleanings and fillings who would like to feel more relaxed during their visit.
